Matthew's Church of England Primary and Nursery Academy which opened in 2015, is an exciting new school in the Derriford area of Plymouth. Designed to accommodate a three form entry of 90 pupils each year creating a school of 630 pupils. In addition the school also provides a Nursery unit catering for 27 children from 3 to 4 years of age.
Recognising its historic foundation, the academy preserves and develops its religious character in accordance with the principles of the Church of England and in partnership with the churches at parish and diocesan level. It is a supportive, inclusive and welcoming family that integrates academic excellence and collaborative thinking with outstanding community involvement.
St. Matthew’s, as a ‘gift of God’, aims to serve the community and the common good by providing an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian beliefs and practice. The school offers strong leadership with an approach which provides a broad and balanced curriculum that fosters all elements of children’s growth as learners.
This is supported by a clear ethos and set of values and a strong Christian character where children are encouraged to foster respect, understanding, compassion, tolerance and forgiveness as they learn to broaden their horizons and to achieve their all-round potential within an aspirational setting.
The school aims to help the children to lay down strong personal foundations and equip them with the ability to adapt and become resilient within the ever-changing world in which we live.
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
- Matthew 5: 14-16
